Trees with Birds

2001-2011

In the summer of 2001 I made the first of several series of small fanciful bronze trees, whose branches contained variously birds, leaves, blossoms, or butterflies. These little trees were cast directly in bronze from branches and shrubs I found while walking, and as a result they are one-of-a-kind.

Over the next ten years I made many more series of these trees, including some that sit on the top of bronze boxes rather than on wooden bases.

Although I tapered off in making trees because I wasn't finding new branches that interested me, occasionally I do find a good piece of wood with interesting lines, that doesn't duplicate trees I've made previously, so there have been a few new pieces. Some are in the same naturalistic vein as before, but others are more abstract in treatment.
